Don’t Overlook Golf Warm Up Exercises

By Mike Pedersen
Golf Training Expert

As with any sport, it is very important to warm up before playing golf. Every golfer should complete appropriate golf warm up exercises before teeing off.

Not only do you risk injury when you play without completing proper golf warm up exercises ahead of time, your game is also likely to suffer. Many players who don’t warm up before playing do not do very well on their first few holes.

This is because the body is not ready to play at its best until it is properly warmed up and ready to go. Swinging a golf club requires flexibility and power, and it is important to prepare your body for this impact by completing golf warm up exercises before taking your first swing.

A good golf warm up exercise routine will prepare you physically and mentally for a strong performance on the golf course. Players who perform golf warm up exercises before teeing off tend to play better than if they skipped warming up.

Players who complete a simple pre golf routine ahead of time start out with an advantage because their body is loose and ready to swing with flexibility and power. Additionally, there is less risk of injury to players who follow a proper total body golf specific warm up routine prior to playing.

Your warm up should include activities designed to loosen up your shoulders because of the active role they play in the motion of swinging your golf club.

A good golf exercise to warm up also targets stretching and loosening up your lower back, hamstring and gluteal muscles. An excellent golf warm up exercise is one that involves a traditional squat movement paired with arm raising and lowering motion.

To perform this warm up golf exercise, stand so that your feet are apart at approximately the width of your shoulders. Hold your golf club in front of you with one hand on each end of the club.

Keeping your upper body in an erect position, bend at your knees, and lower your body in a squatting motion. As you bend your knees, bring the club above your head, keeping both hands on the club. Keeping the club in the air, return to a standing position and then lower your arms.

This warm up exercise for golf targets key shoulder, legs, lower back and gluteal muscles. Repeating this golf warm up exercise 15 times before teeing off can have a positive impact on your golf game.

The benefits of taking the time to do golf warm up exercises before starting cannot be overemphasized. Golfers who want to excel at their game will be pleased with the results of incorporating a golf warm up exercise component into their pre-game routines.
