Golf Stretching Do’s And Don’ts
Golf stretching has become very prevalent with even a full 30 minute informercial on the Golf Channel. Because golf stretching has become mainstream with even the amateur golfer…you need to know some simple “do’s and dont’s” to make your golf stretching routing effective.
Do #1:
Warm up for at least 5 minutes before you start to stretch your muscles. This is critical! If you don’t, you risk injury.
Do #2:
Hold each stretch for 15 seconds…no longer. There is no need to blow a gasket while stretching!
Do #3
Repeat each stretch twice, and take the second stretch a little further to improve current range of motion.
Do #4
Do your complete golf stretching routine at least 3 times a week, and preferrably more often.
Don’t #1
Don’t bounce when stretching! This is called ballistic stretching and can put you at risk of injury.
Don’t #2
Don’t hold a stretch for over 15 seconds. You hear all kinds of instructions such as hold for a minute. That’s crazy! Nobody can hold a stretch for 60 seconds without blowing a gasket as mentioned above.
Don’t #3
If you feel pain…STOP IMMEDIATELY!
Don’t #4
Do NOT lock any joint while stretching! You risk injury to ligaments, tendons and even bone when you do this.
These “do’s and don’ts” may seem basic, but I can tell you I hear horror stories daily on issues with golf stretching. If you want to learn the correct way…take a look at my golf stretching dvds.
