How many golf drivers do you have in your garage? Come on…how many?
I have five of them!
I will admit, I only purchase a new golf driver about every 4-5 years, since my philosophy…”it’s not your equipment, it’s your body” is what I live by.
But every now and again, I get the itch to go to my local golf store…and god only knows what I’ll come out with.
About a year ago, when I was visiting family back in Oregon, I came across a brand new golf store. Golf Galaxy was the name. For Oregon, it was awesome!
For the record, I wasn’t even looking for a new golf driver, but I proceeded to ask a young kid working there about their latest greatest drivers.
I’ve never before done this, but he lined up 10, yes…10 drivers for me to hit in this virtual screen that supposedly shows ball flight and distance.
I started going through them one-by-one and eliminating the ones that didn’t feel right. But it was comical…the screen was showing my average drive to be over 330 yards and my ball speed to be over 175mph. I don’t know how much I believe those gadgets, but I do hit my drives consistently over 300 when I play.
Anyways…I finally picked the Mizuno golf driver with a 9.5 degree loft. The shaft is just a standard stiff that weighs 75 grams.
I love this driver!
I’ve never hit a driver so far and straight. For a hack like me, it is very forgiving, and allows me to give it a good rip.
I still believe..”it’s not your equipment”, but it sure is fun to get something new once in a while.
Every golfer dreams of a golf driver swing with a ton of power. I know everytime I pull out my driver, I want to launch it well over 300 yards…but that doesn’t always happen. How come?
It’s a known fact, that if you try harder at any athletic movement, your muscles get tighter. Tighter muscles move SLOWER, therefore producing LESS power and for golfers, much less distance.
The answer to this golf driver swing dilemma is 70%!
When you step on the course, you “got what you got”. You’re not going to miraculously get stronger or more flexible, so swing beyond your current physical capabilities will get you know where.
So the solution to this problem is swing your golf driver at 70% max effort for you. This is really hard to do…trust me. It’s so much easier just to whack at it with all your might and hope your golf swing sequence was close to being good, so you get back to impact with in the right positions.
Swinging at 70% will allow you to have a much more consistent golf swing sequence, therefor promoting better ball-clubface contact. Hitting the center of the clubface is critical if you want to take advantage of good swing mechanics.
Swinging at 130 mph and hitting it off the toe of your driver will results in 10 to 20 to 30 or more yards LOST off the tee.
So next time you go out, swing the entire round at 70% of your current maximum and see what happens.
Here’s to happy golfing!
Lack of distance in golf is the not a mystery. In fact, most golfers realize there is a physical component to optimal golf distance. I don’t want to try to fool you by saying the physical aspect is the only limiting factor. Solidness of hit is critical to maximizing distance. In simpler terms, hitting the center of the clubface consistently.
But…to hit the center of the clubface requires an efficient swing that’s consistent for 18 holes. That does involve the physical component directly.
You see…if your body is weak or inflexible, you will be incapable of making one mechanically sound golf swing, let alone for 18 holes. Therefore, lack of distance can be directly related to a physical limitation in your body, that won’t allow you to make an optimal golf swing for 18 holes.
Did you watch the tournament this weekend?
Tiger Woods amazes me! He hits less than 50% of his fairways, but leads in “greens in regulation”. That blows my mind. He is so creative…and strong, that he can get out of anywhere.
No one else on tour has that ability to turn a bad drive into a birdie like he can!
I am not one to blow anyones horn, but Tiger is like no other. I watched that tournament in awe.
And notice how all the other players (Phil, David Thoms, etc.), seem to crumble at Tigers feet? He has such a mental edge over everyone!
Who is going to “step up” and challenge him?
How many times have you stepped up on the tee and tried for more yards with no luck? How long you hit your drives seems to be a hot topic among golfing buddies and even on tour. I have an easy golf swing tip that can produce more power where it counts…at impact!
This golf swing tip involves ball position with your driver.
Here it is…
…put the ball further up in your stance. Try on the range to get it opposite your big toe of your lead leg. You may have to move it back just a bit if it doesn’t work for you.
I just did this and it instantly cured my big hook and jacked up my driving distance a ton!
The benefit of this ball position is to be able to get “behind the ball” completely at the top of your backswing…and stay behind the ball at impact…producing maximum power!
I’m telling you it works! Bigtime! Give it a try!
Man…just when I thought I saw it all with the “bomb-blasting” golf drives of Bubba Watson…I see another guy who absolutely kills it!
J.B. Holmes.
This guy can flat out launch it!
I was blown away by how far he hit his drives on television at the FBR Open today! You want to talk about Power Golf?
He is young and VERY strong. He puts his whole entire body into his long drive golf swing.
The advantage he has being a long driver is every Par 5 is now turned into a Par 4. He is looking at birdie at the worst on most Par 5’s. That’s a game I’m not familiar with.
The Tour is going to be fun to watch with these young, long-drive bombers coming aboard.
There is a “new guy” in town who can flat out launch his golf drive! His name…Bubba Watson. Did you see him on the television a week or so ago?
No one hit it even close to as far as he did! Tiger wasn’t in that tournament, but even Tiger has been quoted saying…
Woods talked about him at his Buick press conference, describing a par-4 they played together once. It was a drive-able, dogleg left, and Woods said a driver was too much for him, and a 3-wood too little.
Bubba pulled out an iron. And hit it on.
“I don’t have that shot,” Woods dead-panned.
It will be fun to watch Bubba’s golf driver swing on tour this year…but my nod goes to Tiger to crush him on pure performance.
Man…did you see how far Bubba Watson hits his driver? I was watching a little bit of the Sony Open today and this guy hits long golf drives! They are already comparing him to Big John!
He has already become a crowd favorite with his personality and gutsy swings with not only his driver but irons as well. He was hitting cut shots with his golf driver and draws with his irons.
If he could have made a few more putts, he would have made a much bigger paycheck this week.
It’s quite obvious that people are in to watching a LONG drive golf swing, more so than accurac on tour! The longer the better!
