Find Out How To Become More Flexible In Golf

Golfers (especially) the older ones know they should be stretching, but many don’t know how to become more flexible when it comes to the golf swing. It’s quite easy! Break the golf swing down into bite-size chunks and do a stretch for each one.  This would improve every aspect of your golf swing.  Your backswing, downswing, follow through, impact and many more.

All it takes is a few minutes daily to see amazing results.  Consistency is crucial. If you start and then soon quit you’ll have wasted your time and effort for nothing. If you have to, get a stretching for golf dvd, or a stretches for golf ebook to guide you.

Weekend Golf Stretch For Better Posture

Here’s a golf stretch I want you to do this weekend when you’re on the course that will keep your hamstrings and lower back nice and lose for better golf posture and less strain on your back. You should even feel better when you’re in your putting stance on the green!

This is one simple golf stretch out of my Total Golf Stretching ebook.

Instructions:

Slightly flexed knees.

Grab club and bend at hips.

Let arms hang relaxed in front of legs.

Stretch hamstrings and lower back by lowering club down legs.

Come back up and repeat with moderate speed.

Repeat 3-5 times.

Benefit to Golf Swing:

Increase circulation in lumbar (lower back) area to withstand the high torque from initial swings.

Allow for a more relaxed posture position through out swing.

Reduce chance of injury to lower back early in the round.

Do this several times during your round and let me know how it goes. You should feel less strain on your back, improved golf posture throughout the round, and more consistency in your putting.

PGA Golf Stretch

With the last major of the year (PGA Championship) coming up this weekend, don’t even try to tell me you’re not going to be watching.  Why not make the most of your time by doing a simple, yet very useful golf stretch?  This is the best time to sneak in a stretch or two and it doesn’t affect your hectic schedule.  You’re already sitting down relaxing watching the tournament.

As you can see in the picture, I’m doing a golf stretch to improve my hip rotation at impact.  I have never seen this stretch done in any book, but it’s just one of many effective stretches in my golf stretching dvd.

Grab a high back chair like I’m doing and get in your golf posture.  Now rotate your hips as much as you can as if you were swinging powerfully through impact.  Keeping your shoulders square by having your hands on the chair, and also maintaining your golf posture, really get those hips as far around as you can, then hold it for maybe 5-10 seconds and repeat a couple of more times.

Do this very unique and effective stretch several times throughout this week’s tournament and watch what happens next time you go play…you’ll instantly feel more power through impact.  This is exactly what the pros look like at impact, and so can you!

Core Flexibility Training Increases Power And Distance

You’ve probably heard the phrase core by now.  It’s a big buzzword in golf.  Core flexibility training for golf is one of the quickest approaches to improve the distance of all your clubs.

This type of flexibility training will improve your ability to make a full backswing with minimal tension, creating maximum torque and a much higher clubhead speed…resulting in a dramatic increase in distance.

For more flexibility training for core, read the golf flexibility articles on this site.

Golf Flexibilty That Is Dynamic Produces Results

mike_lng_twst_club2.jpgWhen you are trying to improve your golf swing, you want to focus on dynamic golf flexibility specific to the movements of your golf swing. What I mean by dynamic is “movement”. Nevery holding a stretch for over 5 seconds.

Don’t get me wrong, there is a time and a place for more of a static program. My golf stretching dvd is very dynamic in body positions, but I hold each of those golf stretches for up to 15 seconds to improve those specific ranges of motion.

Actually, you can take the very same stretches in my dvd and make them dynamic by holding for a split second then moving in sequence with the rest of the stretches I guide you through.

Dynamic can mean the movement phase of the stretch and also the position, which for golf would be a phase of the golf swing. Look at the picture above and you’ll see how Iam stepping into a lunge and rotating my upper body at the same time. This is a very dynamic golf specific stretch.

Golf Swing Flexibility Exercises Are Unique And Effective

We know that flexibility is a “buzzword” in golf and that we need to do it, but did you know that there is a more specific approach I termed golf swing flexibility exercises that will give you your biggest bang for your buck?

mike_pose_backswing_club1.gifDoing stretches specific to your golf swing is called “sport-specific” training.  Yes, I said that word that sounds like a lot of work…”training”.

If anything in life were easy, everybody would be great and life would be boring.

There is lots of information out there on golf flexibility and even a golf stretching dvd or two.

Take a look at the picture in this post. This is a good example of a golf swing flexibility exercise that will have a direct impact on your golf swing.

If you want to improve your golf swing, try flexibility exercises like the illustration and you’ll be well on your way to a much improved golf swing.

Dynamic Golf Flexibility And Stretching
Improves Golf Swing Power

Dynamic golf flexibility and stretching is the correct way to improve your golf specific range of motion for a full back swing with minimal tension. When golfers think of stretching, they typically think of the “hold” (static) stretching.

The golf swing is a sequentional “motion” (dynamic), so you should be doing dynamic golf flexibility stretching exercises to get the most benefit. Along with these specific types of stretches, you should incorporate dynamic golf strength exercises to avoid overstretching and even possible injury to joints during the swing.

Golf Swing Flexibility Tip For Fast Results

Golf swing flexibility is a hot topic! There is even an entire infomercial on it! Golfers are finally realizing that their body is what’s keeping them from making a mechanically sound and repeatable golf swing.

With that realization comes implementation of a golf swing flexibility AND golf exercise program.

There are many things to remember when it comes to your golf swing flexibility routine to get the most out of it.

  • Make sure to do a 3-5 minute warm up before stretching; or stretch right after a warm shower in the morning.
  • Do each golf stretch a minimum of 2 if not 3 times each to get 100% out of stretch.
  • Good breathing is critical to getting adequate oxygen to your muscles for a more relaxed muscle and effective stretch.
  • Break your golf swing down into phases and create a stretch. Just use a little creativity and you’ll soon have your very own golf stretches.
  • Do it consistently throughout the week to get the results you want!
  • Do a little research to find a golf stretching program that incorporates strength as well.

Improved golf swing flexibility will catapult you past all your golfing buddies off the tee!

A Senior Golfer Needs To Work On Both Golf Flexibility And Strength

I always hear senior golfers talk about their golf flexibility, and how much range of motion they’ve lost throughout the years. While playing with them it is quite obvious they are correct, but I need to also add most of them have very weak golf muscles as well.

So many times a senior golfer thinks a few golf stretches a couple times a weak will do the trick. I’m a firm believer in “anything is better than nothing”, but the reality is… you need to do it more often and incorporate golf strength training to see improvement in your power, distance and overall game.

Let me give you an example.

A senior golfer does a few golf stretches, but no golf weight training. The result is the muscle range of motion is not permanent. The senior golfer did not strengthen the muscle in this newfound range of motion and it wasn’t able to maintain it.

Now another scenario is strengthening those golf muscles with resistance in the same range of motion that you are doing with your golf stretching. The muscle gets stronger and is able to keep this new range.

The end result is a BIGGER backswing… more POWER… AND LONGER tee shots conistently!
