Fix Golf Sway To Hit Pure Golf Shots
I want to talk about lateral sway in your golf swing and how to fix it to improve your consistency and accuracy. How good does it feel when you hit it pure? The ball rockets of your clubface, and goes far and straight. Isn’t that a thing of beauty? A golf buddy says, “wouldn’t it be great to bottle up that golf swing”?
How come we can’t bottle it up? One reason is wasted body movement in your swing. I know I have a ton of it, and constantly work on improving it, and it’s an ongoing battle. The golf swing is a very refined movement that is nearly all rotational, and yet we move side-to-side and up-and-down, and wonder why we don’t hit good shots.
What Exactly Is Golf Sway
Lateral sway in golf is where you move to the side (see picture), beyond where you should…to be able to come back down easily. So in this situation, I want to focus on the right knee for a right-handed golfer. Most golfers don’t know this, but the right knee holds the key to hitting more solid shots.
You see…when you take the club back, if your right knee moves to your right (sideways) you are swinging beyond your right leg pivot point, which puts your weight on the outside, rather than the inside of your right foot, and gets it way off center from where you started.
One Fault Equals Another Compensation
Now, with this wasted motion, you’ve created a situation where you have to slide sideways (sway) coming down to hopefully get to a proper impact position. You’ve created an additional timing issue in your swing that will be hard to duplicate for 18 holes. You might have some okay shots, and a lot of bad shots with this lateral move.
The Solution To Your Golf Sway
Have a rock-solid right knee, especially in your backswing. I don’t want you to lock your hip rotation, just the lateral movement of your lower right leg. This is a hard habit to fix, and that is why I believe you can use a golf sway training aid to quickly fix this issue.
I’ve come across a simple (wish I would have created it) swing aid that is specific to this issue. Look at how the strap around the right knee restricts it from moving to the side. It’s brilliant really.
