How To Improve Tempo In Your Golf Swing

Learning how to improve tempo in your golf swing is a critical aspect to hitting the ball long and straight, without swinging out of your shoes. When I think of tempo, Freddie Couples and Ernie Els come to mind right away.

Find Your Personal Tempo

Every golfer has a tempo that’s suited for them. Whether they are a fast-paced hyper guy like Nick Price, or a mellow, low-keyed guy like Ernie. The challenge is in finding your “personal tempo” and being able to have it for 18 holes of golf and not just a couple of swings per round.

For most of us mere mortals, it’s very difficult to find a tempo that works for us, let alone one that we can keep for a round of golf. One of the first things to do is go to the range and do some golf tempo exercises. Play around with the effort level of your swing to get a feel for percentages, distance and accuracy.

Golf Tempo Exercises And Drills

What I mean is for instance, get your driver, start out swinging at 60% effort, and be as smooth as you can. Make note of how far it went, and how accurate. Now notch it up to 70% and do the same. Then finish up at 80%, as you should not ever be swinging harder than that.

This practice exercise/drill will show you how much effort you need to hit it a decent distance with accuracy. This is one way to find a swing tempo that suits you.

I’m sure you’ve heard the counting or cadence tempo drill right? Where you count 1 when you start your swing, 2 at the top and 3 coming down. You try to keep the cadence the same every time you make a swing.

Pro Tempo Tip

I like the idea of a golf tempo training aid. When you can swing a trainer multiple times, you can really get a feel for proper tempo in your golf swing.

Swinging a trainer at home will allow you to do it daily, which will speed up the results you’re looking for, as more repetitions equal faster improvement.

I looked every where for such an aid, until I finally came across one (and the only one I use now) that I know will improve your golf swing tempo for more power, distance and accuracy.
