This Right Knee Technique
If you’ve been struggling with consistency, and you find yourself hitting thin, fat, and even topped golf shots, I want you to pay attention to what your right knee is doing in your backswing.
Many times a golfer will either straighten the right knee in the backswing, or let it move to the side (away from the target), which results in a sway off the ball. This may seem like a minor issued in your swing, but let me tell you from firsthand experience, it WILL cause many faults in your swing unless you fix it right now!
Take a look at the golfer to the left. See that red line? That is the angle he had at address with his right leg, and notice now how he has slid laterally beyond this line, which has resulted in a sway off the golf ball.
Now he has to laterally slide toward target in his downswing, and depending on his timing that day, will either release it too early and hit it fat, or flip it, and hit it thin or top it. This is wasted motion in the golf swing that creates a “timing” issue in the swing.
Right Knee Golf Drill
What I’ve been working on, and you too, can be the knee cap of your right knee. Make mini golf backswings focusing on your right knee cap not moving at all. No rotation or sliding sideways of it. Whatever position it is in at address, keep it no matter what.
This will feel very restricted if you have been swinging with a hyper mobile right knee, but trust me that it will fix many of your swing faults if you do this.
In fact, try to rotate your right knee inward just a touch. Not too much to put strain on your knee, but enough to “preset” it so if you do move a little bit, you’ll be able to maintain the weight on the inside of your right foot at the top of your backswing.
There are several other drills like using golf training sticks inserted outside your right leg, at an angle, so when you make your backswing, you don’t bump into the stick with your right leg, but instead rotate inside it.
Sometimes trying to make a change can be nearly impossible, without the help of a training aid that puts your body in the exact position it needs to be in, then hit balls with it.
