Golf Tips For Coming Over The Top
85% of all amateur golfers have the fault of coming over the top. I know that’s a bold statement, but I just in my gut no it to be true. Implementing golf tips to cure this over the top golf swing move is critical to hitting shots that stay both in the fairway, and go a maximum distance.
Coming over the top is when your upper body starts your downswing first (ahead of your lower body), and you more importantly your right shoulder is going out (over the plane) instead of more down.
Take a look at the picture to your left and you can see how the golfer is now over his swing plane, the shaft is very vertical, and he’s going to hit across his golf ball, resulting in a slice if the clubface is open, or a dead pull if his face is closed.
This move is more of a “hit instinct”, and I know I fight this sometimes too. I want to hit that ball. But in golf the proper golf downswing sequence is the lower body first, followed by the upper body.
And secondly, it’s a dropping of the shoulders, and not an out towards the ball move.
Golf Tip To Fix Your Over The Top Move
There are many tips (swing thoughts) to help you cure this faulty move in your downswing, but a simple one is to think of the right shoulder going DOWN (and not out) in your to start your downswing. This will help you avoid your upper body moving first coming down.
There are many golf drills you can do but a good one is to get to the top, and do a pumping action coming down. So up to the top, drop your right shoulder, check your position, then go right back up to the top and drop it down again. Doing this repeatedly will ingrain a new feeling in your brain and muscles of the proper move coming down.
Among many other golf tips, you can also do a slight bump of your left or lead hip to start your downswing. This is not a lateral slide, but a little bump towards the target with your left hip. This bump will automatically drop your arms to start your downswing, so you will have a better chance of hitting from the inside, and not from over the top.
As you can see, I’m a big believer in golf training for a better swing. As golf is like any other sport. Unless you practice it, you will not see improvement.
