We’ve seen it all over the television. The tour players doing golf weight training programs to hit longer drives and play better golf. It’s no secret anymore that modern day golf is a sport, and to improve in sport, you must do golf training.
What Strength Training For Golf Is Not
I’ve said this many times before, but I am not referring to joining a gym, and lifting heavy weights for 2 hours a day. This would be counter-productive to golf improvement as it would not only take valuable time away from practice and play, but if done incorrectly, can definitely be a detriment to your game.
Like in any sport, improving your strength specific to the movements you do, is a very effective way to excel in your chosen sport, even the recreational golfer. For decades golf was considered a leisure activity, and the term used after golf was the “19th hole”, meaning golfers would go in and have a beer and maybe pizza.
For the younger golfers (and older ones) wanting to exceed in golf, those days are long gone, and now is a total golf improvement approach. This approach is fitness, instruction and mental training. I’ve always said the BEST combination for golf improvement is fitness and instruction, and sure enough, it’s now been put into action with all the younger golfers…on up through college are now doing it.
Resistance Training With Weights At Home
I’ve always said you can do a very effective resistance training program at home in just a few minutes a day. That’s all you need to do. For most golfers, especially the senior golfer, they are not doing any weight training specific to golf, so adding just a few simple exercises specific to your golf swing per day can make a huge difference in you swing power on the course.
All you need is a pair of handweights (dumbbells), resistance tubing, and an exercise ball and you’re good to go.
Golf Specific Weight Training Exercises

Simple Golf Exercise Using A Dumbbell
To be golf specific you must break down the movements of the swing into smaller phases, then add resistance to those faces. For example, look at the picture to your left. I’m doing a dummbell lateral raise in your posture.
Look at how the movement is like making a backswing in golf but with just your right hand. This is just one example of simple exercises, with light weights you can do in just minutes that will improve your swing power and distance.
It’s doing easy, quick and effective weight training exercises like this that any golfer no matter age, ability or fitness level can do right now!
There is no excuse. The expense is minimal. The time required is a joke. And the convenience makes it impossible to deny. It’s a matter of “just doing it and not making excuses. The return on this little investment is huge, if you want to hit longer drives and play better golf for years to come.
